405 was one of the webs first truly popular "viral" videos, and was released in 2001. It was done by a couple of self-taught special-effects artists on their home systems in their spare time over a period of about 3.5 months with readily available (though not exactly cheap) software. Just as a reminder of how long ago that was in computer terms, here's the computer equipment they used to make it (courtesy of 405themovie.com) :
