Apparently, there has recently been intelligence received that may indicate that there might be an attack on Washington in the next month-and-a-half. Ok, specifically between August and September 11th. In response, the Capitol Police have been beefing up their presence around Capitol Hill.
Coincidentally, (or, perhaps not) Bush has been demanding that Congress give him expanded powers to spy on anyone he deems to be a threat and made it clear that he (who's been known to take more vacation time than any other president, and was on vacation - and stayed on vacation - both when he was given the briefing about Osama being determined to strike targets in the US, and when Katrina hit) expected them to give up their own vacation time to get the bill passed.
Enter Trent Lott, who apparently didn't think that made the point strongly enough, so he announced that Congress needs to pass the changes to the "terrorist surveillance program" before going on vacation or face the consequences of an attack on the city. He even went so far as to say that he thought it would be a good idea for people to leave DC between now and September 12th.
Just how stupid is this guy? Seriously! As the former chief of the Capitol Police notes, *we're* the one's with the hang up on dates and anniversaries - terrorists don't focus on those nearly as much. I wonder if that might be because they know we're likely to have increased security at those times, so the attack wouldn't be as successful as it would if they chose a date that had no particular significance?
But even going beyond that, Lott is telling people that it would be a good idea to leave town during August and stay away until September 12th - as if now that the terrorists know that we're on to their plan (if, indeed their even IS a plan) they're just going to go ahead and stick to it, even though they know we'll be ready for them. What makes him think that they won't read the news, see that he's telling everyone to stay away from DC until September 12th and say "Hey! We should schedule our attack for September 13th! There'll be a lot more people there then!"
And of course, everyone caved and Bush got the bill he wanted. I wonder if Trent thinks everyone there will be safe now?

Don't worry, I still find him to be a rather loathsome fellow, but in addition to calling out the administration on the phony war on terror, he's also promoting the idea of **gasp!** both parties working together to solve some of our problems.
If the old boy's not careful, he may find himself kicked out of the GOP for being too reasonable.
Case in point:
See below for more, and read the rest of the article - link is at the top of the Clipmarks window."What I'm trying to start is a new dialogue that is evidence-based," Gingrich said Thursday. "It doesn't start from the right wing, it doesn't start from the left wing," he said, but is an effort to get politicians and voters to "look honestly at the evidence of what isn't working and tell us how to change it."
Gingrich was interrupted with applause once, when he called for an end to the biting partisanship critics say has polarized national politics and paralyzed the workings of government.
"We have got to get past this partisan baloney, where I'm not allowed to say anything good about Hillary Clinton because 'I'm not a loyal Republican,' and she's not allowed to say anything good about me, or she's not a 'loyal' Democrat. What a stupid way to run a country."
He reserved his most pointed criticism for the administration's handling of the global campaign against terrorist groups.
"We've been engaged in a phony war," said Gingrich. "The only people who have been taking this seriously are the combat military."

O'Reilly tries to play off the hateful comments on his own site by saying they must be from "liberals" who are posting them to make him look bad, but each comment is accompanied by the username of the poster and how many other comments they've made - and for some of the worst comments the posters have made literally thousands of other posts, so they've obviously been posting there for a lot longer than O'Reilly's latest campaign has been going.
But back, for a moment, to the post that should have gotten O'Reilly fired. It is at *least* as bad as Don Imus' comments on the Rutger's basketball team or Isaiah Washington's name-calling in regards to his co-worker. Quoting from the San Francisco Chronicle, here's what O'Reilly said after the city voted to oppose military recruiting in public schools and to ban handgun ownership:
This quote is about 18 months old, but it STILL infuriates me to no end. O'Reilly was endorsing the terrorist killing of an entire American city because he didn't like the way they voted on a couple things."You know, if I'm the president of the United States, I walk right into Union Square, I set up my little presidential podium and I say, 'Listen, citizens of San Francisco, if you vote against military recruiting, you're not going to get another nickel in federal funds."
"Fine. You want to be your own country? Go right ahead. And if al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we're not going to do anything about it. We're going to say, look, every other place in America is off limits to you except San Francisco. You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead."
So, while he's still on his crusade of trying to embarrass advertisers who use their ad dollars to support the DailyKos blog or the annual gathering held for the site's posters and commenters, called the YearlyKos, I think it's time to resurrect this comment of his from the dustbin, brush it off, and go after him with it, full throttle. Help send him a message of what happens when HE says something that inappropriate, inexcusable and indefensible.
One of the commenters at ClipMarks, where a *very* abbreviated version of my post did go through ok, posted a link to the image below as a response to my post.
Still, for O'Reilly to be all exercised about "hate speech" at DailyKos is a monument to hypocrisy. Not only do comments at his own site contain comments that are just as inappropriate, inexcusable and indefensible, which, contrary to his implications are *not* being made by liberals or DailyKos supporters trying to make him look bad (you can tell because each comment shows how many comments the poster has made, and some are in the thousands), but Bill O'Reilly himself has been known to make inappropriate, inexcusable and indefensible himself.
Below is a quote from November 2005. I've chosen it because while it's necessarily a recent quote, it is one that is so heinous that O'Reilly should have lost his job over it. It's at least as egrarious as Imus' comment about the Rutger women's basketball player, Isiah Washington's comments about his gay co-worker or many of the other comments that have cost people their jobs.
This comment should be spread around as much as possible. Not enough was made of it at the time, but now, since O'Reilly's on his "saying hateful things is bad" campaign, he needs to be taught just what happens when hateful things come out of HIS mouth.
